Friends, Countrymen, Writers, Lend Me Your Votes

Monday, January 4th, 2010

As many of you probably know, i write a little. And as so often happens with bad habits, I try to share it with as many people as I can. In other words I seek publication. Well, I got a story into Whortleberry Press’ 2009 anthology: “Strange Mysteries.” My contribution was titled: “The Two Mrs. Lees.” It’s the story of a 19th century Chinese wizard and his faithful cat and their adventure in trying to discover why a particular businessman is being haunted. It was fun and I enjoyed writing it.

Well, Whortleberry Press has just announced that they are going to give out a fan favorite award for the stories in the anthology. It’s just bragging rights but since I’ve been known to brag a little, I’ll run for it. That’s where I’m asking for your votes. It’s one vote per computer so I need to reach as many people as I can if I’m to get the votes necessary to pull off first place. So, if you like the story, like me, or just want me to go away, here’s your chance to vote. The link is below and remember, that’s Arthur Sanchez and “The Two Mrs. Lees.”

Soup For You

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

If you’re a fan of the old Seinfeld comedy program you might remember the infamous “Soup Man.” A cranky misanthrope whose tag line was: “No, soup for you!” Well, this week there was plenty of “soup” to go around. No, not the lobster bisque or potato leek kind but the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” kind.

I just got word that my story: “The Girl For Me” will be published in December as part of “Chicken Soup for the Soul: True Love.” The book will be available at all your major retailers like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, etc. Cool, huh?

What’s just as nice is the fact that at the time I was submitting this story, I discovered that the Chicken Soup people were looking for stories about “teachers.” I know, or am related to, quite a few teachers so I immediately put the word out that there was an opportunity for them to tell one of their many really good stories.

One friend of mine said that she had a story but wasn’t sure if she could make it work. I asked to hear it and after hearing it told her she had to write it up and submit. She did. And guess what? She got in! Her story will be appearing in “Chicken Soup for the Teacher’s Soul.”

Now lest anyone start thinking that the Chicken Soup people will publish just about anything, that’s not true. Not only are many professional writers submitting to these books but there are professional comedians, famous people, talk show hosts, etc. who contribute. It ain’t that easy to get your story in there.

But once in a while the stars will line up properly, the wind will pick up from the east, and a sprinkle of pixie dust will land on your printer. And when that happens – Soup For You!

Sometimes Things Work

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

About two weeks ago I was contacted by a gentleman who (along with some friends) was starting up a new web site devoted to reviewing online short stories and print books. He wanted to know if I’d be willing to have my story: “A Box Full of Nothing” which was published on www.anotherealm.com reviewed. He said they wanted to review my story because they generally liked it and at least one reviewer loved that I’d written a Sci Fi story about a garage sale. He also told me that I could expect that the review would not be “grossly negative.” I teased him about that saying that: “if I won’t get a grossly negative review then I was there!”

Well, the review (and accompanying interview) has been published and to say that I was floored is an understatement. To quote the opening two paragraphs:

What do Richard Matheson, Harlan Ellison, Ray Bradbury, Ambrose Bierce, Damon Knight and Arthur Sanchez share in common? Richard Matheson, Harlan Ellison, Ray Bradbury, Ambrose Bierce, Damon Knight all had their work, or versions of their work, on the Twilight Zone. Arthur Sanchez’s work would fit right in.

A Box Full of Nothing by Arthur Sanchez is a good read and story.

Bottom line, as reviews go, it don’t get no better than that.

Now, to the cynical, this will appear to be a set up. Maybe there’s some Quid Pro Quo going on here? Maybe Arthur Sanchez is the mastermind behind this obvious attempt at self-promotion. But thankfully, for my ego at least, there isn’t. The guys over at http://independentpressreview.blogspot.com/ were free to write what they thought. I even told the Editor that I’d welcome negative comments so long as they were constructive. I want to know what didn’t work just as much as what did. I can use that feedback to make my future stories better.

Well, sometimes things work. Sometimes all the stars align and you do good. And when that happens, you don’t ask why, you just enjoy the moment. Because if the Universe stays true to form, I’m about to get slammed for writing a trite, cliché’d, piece of you-know-what any second now. It’s one of those Yin/Yang things. I expect it.

Anyways, if you’d like to read the review and interview, just go to: http://independentpressreview.blogspot.com/

Common Sense, Sometimes, Ain’t That Common

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Ok, I just saw this on www.anotherealm.com. It’s a web site for Sci Fi, Fantasy, and Horror fiction. The site is an ezine but it has a bulletin board where people can post information on the stories they publish or on writing in general. A fellow writer posted a link to a story about how publishers are now requiring that authors meet their delivery dates — or they’ll cancel the contract. Ok, there’s more wrong with that statement than you know. To save on typing I’m going to repost my comment here. I’ll post a link to the original newstory at the bottom of this entry. But all I gotta say is no wonder the publishing world is in trouble. And here I am trying to break into it.

My response:

Well, duh? Isn’t it obvious that not meeting your contractual obligations is grounds for the contract to be terminated and any money advanced to be returned? I like how the article says that publishers didn’t used to mind if authors missed their delivery dates. I’d very much like to meet those publishers. Imagine running a clothing factory where it’s ok if the guy making the cloth for your clothes does or does not make his delivery date. Imagine the clothing stores being told they aren’t going to get their orders cause the factory never produced the outfits.

Yeah, that works.

I’m sorry but I think that very few writers in this world can get away with that kind of behavior. Even J.K. Rowling, whom at one point was making more money than the Queen of England, got in trouble by being a year late on one of her books and her publisher started talking about suing her. Meeting the terms of your contract is just good business sense.

Besides, if you’re lucky enough to land an agent, and then luckier to land a book deal, you should really have no problem delivering your book upon the promised date. I mean, that’s why you’re there, to deliver your book, get published, make the NY Times Best Sellers List, win an award, get called a “hack” by the critics, get called a “sell out” by the fans, get into a fist fight with the paparazzi after a night of binge drinking, get sued for plagiarism by a writer who didn’t win any awards, go into rehab for an undisclosed “ailment,” find Jesus (or Moses, or Allah, or Buddha, or L. Ron Hubbard), and start again. It’s the Cycle of Publishing Life, get used to it.

For Your Consideration

Monday, July 13th, 2009

That’s how the invites for Oscar nominees always read: “For Your Consideration . . .” Well, it ain’t the Oscars but it is an award for “Most Intriguing Trailer.” And from what I’ve heard, most of you think the trailer for “Sha’daa Tales of the Apocalypse” was pretty intriguing. Missed the trailer? No problem, here’s the link:

http://www.cyberwizardproductions.com/altered/shadaa.html.

In any case, the trailer (link above) is in the running for the award and we need all your help to win. So, if you liked the trailer, vote. If you liked that we had a trailer, vote. In other words, just vote. Here’s the link: http://thenewcoveytrailerawards.blogspot.com/

We’re Entry #18. You can vote on the form on the left-hand side of your screen.

Thanks and much appreciated.

I Won First Place

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

As many of you know I try to regularly submit to writing contests on the net held by different fiction sites. I don’t do any that require an entry fee. (Too many of those turn out to be scams.) And I do try submit to sites that have a bulletin board where the readers can post comments on the stories. It’s a great way to get feedback from people who don’t know you and who are only reacting to your story. That said, if you follow my example, be prepared to get some off-the-wall comments. Not everybody will see your story the way you do. Some of those comments will be valid and some won’t. The trick here is to spot the difference.

Well, I won one of those contests I was just mentioning. Yup, my story “Tax Time” won first place in www.Anotherealm.com “Tax Time” contest. The interesting thing is that the stories are rated by the readers and it’s that rating that the site uses to determine votes. Incredibly, three of us tied for first place and they had to have a run off vote to determine the winner. I won the run off vote.

(Roll acceptance music.)

“I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me: my mom and dad, (though they don’t own a computer), my wife, my sisters, their spouses, my nephews and nieces, cousins, the newspaper boy, that guy down at the coffee shop, and anybody else who bothered to click a button and give me their approval. Thank you.”

And if you haven’t read the story (and I know there are a few of you out there) you can still read it for FREE here: http://anotherealm.org/modules/AMS/article.php?storyid=33

Sha’Daa on BlogTalk Radio

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Tomorrow night (Saturday 5/30/09) at 11 pm Michael Hanson will be appearing on Ben Eads’ BlogTalkRadio program “Dark Fiction Show.” Mike, as you know, is the creative force behind “Sha’Daa Tales of the Apocalypse.” It should be an interesting show cause you’ll get the hear Mike explain his inspiration for the book and how he (with the help of Editor Ed McKeown) wrangled over a dozen writers (think cats) into some semblance of a cohesive whole. Just go to their website: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/Dark-Fiction-Show to hear the broadcast or the show can be downloaded as a podcast after it airs on Saturday.

Once Again, I Need Your Votes

Monday, May 11th, 2009

In an unprecedented 3-way tie, my story Tax Time is tied for First Place with three other stories in the “Tax Time” Flash Fiction Contest. The good people at www.Anotherealm.com have opted to let the readers decide who should win the contest. Now there isn’t any prize money to be won but there are bragging rights to be had. So, I need your votes! If you liked my story, or think that you would like my story once you read it, hop over to Anotherealm.com and vote for it. I have no idea when the cutoff date for voting is so vote sooner rather than later. Here’s the link: Vote For Me!

Sha’Daa is Here!

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Five long years ago fellow writer Mike Hanson had an insane idea. He’d conceived of a story involving a “demon apocalypse” that occurred every 10,000 years called the Sha’Daa. Now the crazy part of the idea (remember, we’re writers, demon apocalypses don’t count as insane) was to invite a group of writers to write seperate adventures that would fit within the overall structure of the story. It was to be one story told by many voices and from many perspectives.

Well, the result was Sha’Daa Tales of the Apocalypse. It’s a collection of Lovecraftian horror stories that range from the truly frightening to plain old funny. The book is being published by Altered Dimensions which is an imprint of Cyberwizard Productions. It was released today and it rocks! The book can be purchased directly from the publisher here, or through Amazon.com, or Barnes & Noble.

Oh, and my story: The Way of the Warrior, features Shinzo, a Japanese monk who hasn’t learned to master anything other than his Nintendo Game Cube. Yet, the fate of humanity may rest in his trembling hands.
